Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
