European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
